The Bespoke Process
Designing a custom piece of jewelry is a personal, collaborative experience. Whether we’re working with a stone you already have or sourcing something entirely new, here’s what you can expect when you create a bespoke piece with us.
Initial Inquiry
Begin by reaching out through our custom inquiry form, or by selecting a design from our collection to personalize as your own.
Share what you’re envisioning, your timeline, and any inspiration or materials you have in mind. Photos and sketches are always welcome.
Concept & Estimate
Once we have the details, we’ll talk through your ideas and preferences, conceptualizing what form your piece may take.
This is the stage at which we make sure your visions align with our aesthetic and approach. If your project falls outside the scope of what we offer at Elvie, we’ll let you know early on, with transparency and respect for your time and ideas.
If we’re aligned, we’ll be able to provide a general estimate based on materials and complexity. This isn’t a finalized quote, but a helpful range to guide next steps.
Kindly note: Due to the time, expertise, and attention required for fully custom work, custom commissions begin at a minimum of $5,000.
Initial Deposit
To reserve your place in our custom queue and begin any work, we require a non-refundable deposit of $1,000. This allows us to dedicate the time, care, and resources your project deserves.
For clients providing their own stones, this deposit moves us directly into design development.
Stone Sourcing
For clients requiring stone sourcing, the initial deposit allows us to begin seeking out options that align with your vision, budget, and priorities. We work closely with trusted suppliers to access the highest quality antique and modern diamonds, as well as fine colored gemstones.
If you're local to New York City, there may be an opportunity to view selected stones in person. If you're located elsewhere, we always provide detailed photos or videos to help you make a confident, informed choice.
For certain projects—particularly those involving rare or antique stones with specific criteria—it’s possible that only one strong option may present itself. These types of stones are often highly sought after, and sourcing them can require patience and flexibility as we wait for the right match to appear.
In some cases—especially when the stone represents a significant portion of the project’s overall cost—we may require a second deposit before securing the selected stone. This is typically 50% of the estimated total, with your initial $1,000 deposit applied toward that amount. This ensures we can move forward responsibly without advancing funds on your behalf.
Design & Rendering
Once a stone is selected, we begin developing the design—since every setting is custom made to fit the exact dimensions and character of the stone, never the other way around. Our settings are not one-size-fits-all; each one is built from the ground up to ensure the stone is properly supported, beautifully framed, and perfectly proportioned.
We’ll explore the design through sketches and CAD renderings, giving you the chance to review, ask questions, and request refinements. We only move into production once you’re completely happy with the direction.
Once the design is finalized and all materials have been selected, we’ll provide a final quote and projected timeline.
The remaining balance is due upon completion, before delivery or pickup.
Design Approval & Final Quote
Wax or Metal Model
If desired, we can create a wax or metal model of your design for try-on before moving into final production. This optional step adds a few weeks to the process, but can be especially helpful for assessing scale, fit, and comfort.
Production & Stone Setting
Once the design is finalized, your piece is cast in metal using the lost wax casting method. After casting, every element is meticulously hand-finished (cleaned, assembled, polished, and set, all by hand).
There is a skilled craftsperson behind every step of the process; nothing is mass produced. Stones are treated with the utmost respect and care, and are set by our master setter, whose decades of experience include work for renowned high jewelry houses.
Appraisal & Delivery
Once complete, we’re happy to obtain an appraisal if you plan to insure your piece. When it’s ready to leave our hands, the final balance is collected, and your piece is carefully packaged and shipped fully insured—or available for in-person pickup if you're local to NYC.
A lifetime of loving your new heirloom begins!
